I ran out of nibs for my Intuos 2, so I figured it was a good opportunity to return to some traditional media that I haven’t visited in a long time. Also, I wanted to see what it was like to try writing some hànzì with ink!
I excitedly called in my wife afterwards, who is native Chinese. She showed me how to do it properly… and I clearly have a LONG way to go.
An unfinished painting of Vladimir that I forgot about. I should probably do more stuff with this kind of perspective… good practice.
Lip drawing practice!
A bunch of glossy lips from various sources. This was a lot of fun!
A 3-hour portrait from a photo reference. I’m really happy with the colors!
I think this is a Japanese swimsuit idol named Rina Aizawa… but I’m not entirely sure.
A sketch of some guy in an old book full of vintage photography that I found at my parent’s house.
Girl #16
Trying out a different color palette. Also, I’m trying to find more heavy bristle brush strokes for PaintTool SAI. I’m not really satisfied with the set I have now - I need to find more bristly brushes!
A portrait of a friend. Took about 3 hours in PaintTool SAI.
Painting of Mia from Discretional Valor. I like some of the colors and values in her hair, but I’m not so happy about the face. Maybe I should practice more references…
Edit: I fixed a lot of things I didn’t like about her face, and I used smoother brushes to make it look softer.
A 5 hour plus painting of melell, a friend from an art practice group I’m a member of. The costume is her original design, and includes over 70 LEDs that she put together herself!
This is one of the most challenging portraits I’ve done. I still feel that I need work on backgrounds, but I feel like I’m starting to improve!
Another speed paint, this time of a Beatrix Cosplayer. If you would like to see more of her work, here is her DevaintArt Gallery:
This took 2.5 hours, and I might continue it later!
There is not enough FFIX love!
A 2-hour speed paint of this amazing Cobra Commander cosplay. I don’t know who the cosplayer is, but kudos.
That gun looks familar, doesn’t it?
A 3-hour practice paint of Simone Simons from Epica. Painted with PaintToolSAI from a reference photo.
If you like Dutch symphonic metal, then you will probably like her! Here is one of her recent hits.
An hour or two practice painting of a Chinese model. I can’t find the original reference, but I’ll tag it with one if I can find it later.
Practice painting of a woman. I tried to make her look more American… I draw too many women that look Asian!
